✨ Close search and shortcuts panels with Escape (#12374)
* ✨ Close search and shortcuts panels with Escape

The workspace search and shortcuts panels could only be dismissed with
the mouse, which interrupts keyboard-first workflows.

A new use-escape-to-close hook gives each panel an on-key-down handler
that closes it on Escape while the user is working in it: the latest
pointer press or focus change must have landed inside the panel, or the
panel must hold focus when it opens (a panel that autofocuses its search
box, such as Shortcuts, is closed by the first Escape). Focus left
behind in a panel after the user moved on to the canvas does not count,
so Escape keeps its usual meaning there.

The handler never stops the event. The global Escape shortcut still
runs and finishes in-progress operations such as path drawing; an
earlier version stopped propagation and left a half-drawn path that
failed shape validation on the next commit.

In the search panel an open filters menu takes the first Escape and
the panel closes on the second.

The history panel needs no handler: Escape already closes it through
the :interrupt it emits.

Closes #9540

* 📎 Add e2e test for closing panels with Escape

Cover the Escape handling added for the layers search and shortcuts
panels with four Playwright cases on the mocked workspace:

- Escape closes the layers search panel.
- With the search filters menu open, the first Escape closes only the
menu and the second closes the panel.
- Escape closes the shortcuts panel right after it opens with `?`. The
panel autofocuses its search box, so the first Escape must close it
instead of only blurring the box.
- A path drawn while focus sits in the shortcuts panel is finished by
Escape, which proves the panel does not swallow the global shortcut.

The first three cases fail on develop. The shortcuts case also fails
when the hook does not seed its tracker from the focused element.

* 🐛 Close History with Escape when opened by shortcut or menu

Only the header button opened History through initialize-history, which
removes the :document-history flag on the next :interrupt. The
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+H shortcut and the "Version history" menu item toggled the
flag directly, so the global Escape left the panel open. Both now emit
initialize-history, like the header, and keep their own event origin.

Two e2e cases cover the shortcut and the menu; both fail without this
change.

* ♻️ Apply review suggestions to Escape-to-close

Use dom/child? instead of .contains in the Escape hook and drop the
redundant nil checks. Drive the path test through clickAt so its clicks
wait for the path tool. Add a negative Search case: Escape reaches the
panel after the last click landed on the viewport, and the panel stays
open. That case fails when the containment check is removed.

Penpot is the open-source design platform for teams that build digital products at scale.

Penpot’s key strength lies in giving you full ownership of your design infrastructure. Built on open source and designed for self-hosting, it puts teams in complete control of their design environment supporting strict compliance and governance requirements. Whether used in the browser or deployed on your own servers, Penpot works with open standards like SVG, CSS, HTML, and JSON.

Real-time collaboration strengthens this foundation, helping teams scale and bring design closer to the product through top-tier capabilities. Additionally, developers feel at home using Penpot, because design is expressed as code, enabling a direct translation and shipping products faster.

Best-in-class native Design Tokens provide a single source of truth between design and development. They ensure consistency, improve collaboration, and make it easier to manage complex design systems.

The MCP server takes it further by enabling multi-directional workflows between design and code. A powerful open API and plugin system makes the workspace programmable, enabling automation, AI-driven workflows, and integrations with the tools and systems you already use.

With CSS Grid and Flex Layout, teams can design responsive interfaces that behave like real code from the start.

Combined, these features turn Penpot into a full-stack design platform for building scalable design systems and fully integrated product development processes.

If your organization is scaling and needs extra support, we’re here to help. Talk to us

Why Penpot

Penpot connects design, code, and AI workflows through a code-based approach, making designs readable by developers and AI via the MCP server. This approach helps teams ship what’s actually designed and manage design systems at scale with powerful design tokens. As a self-hosted, open-source and real-time collaboration platform, Penpot offers full flexibility, security, and ownership without vendor lock-in. Learn more about why Penpot is the platform for your team.

Plugin system

Penpot plugins let you expand the platform's capabilities, give you the flexibility to integrate it with other apps, and design custom solutions.

Designed for developers

Penpot was built to serve both designers and developers and create a fluid design-code process. You have the choice to enjoy real-time collaboration or play "solo".

Inspect mode

Work with ready-to-use code and make your workflow easy and fast. The inspect tab gives instant access to SVG, CSS and HTML code.

Integrations

Penpot offers integration into the development toolchain, thanks to its support for webhooks and an API accessible through access tokens.

Building Design Systems: design tokens, components and variants

Penpot brings design systems to code-minded teams: a single source of truth with native Design Tokens, Components, and Variants for scalable, reusable, and consistent UI across projects and platforms.
