CommonMark forbids an info string on a closing fence, so "```python" inside a
plain ``` fence is content, not the end of the block. The closer check that two
fence consumers share only compared character and run length, which ends the
block early and pushes whatever follows back into prose: on the render path a
system marker inside the sample loses its tags and its content becomes visible
text, and on the export path stripInternalMarkers deletes real user content from
the thread markdown.
mermaid.ts already had the correct predicate privately. Move it into the shared
leaf module and use it from both consumers, so the three fence scanners in
core/streamdown and core/messages agree on what closes a block.
* feat(projects): Projects MVP Phase 2 — instructions, document shelf, promotion, trash
Implements docs/superpowers/specs/2026-09-12-projects-mvp-phase2-design.md
(issue #5160, tracker #5129) in the slice order of the spec's §16.
Slices:
- A: ProjectsConfig + write-time 422 UTF-8 byte cap; PROJECT_CONTEXT_KEY
admission pinning (both server-owned sets + worker hoist); latest-only
request-scoped <project> block via DynamicContextMiddleware
wrap_model_call/awrap_model_call (idempotent reassembly, reserved ID
prefix + marker + provenance, never persisted); journal audit
fingerprints; Instructions tab.
- B: ProjectDocumentRow + migration 0023; ProjectDocumentRepository with
locked check-and-set; hash-qualified immutable shelf storage with
Paths helpers; upload/list/content/delete-to-trash routes; project
delete trashes the shelf in-transaction; request-scoped bounded
<documents> index with honest count/shown + actionable overflow note;
list_project_documents/read_project_document tools registered only on
pinned runs; PAT allowlist + drift guards; blocking-IO anchors.
- C: shared thread-upload ingestion service (uploads router refactored to
parity); POST from-thread with provenance; attach-to-thread with
lock-staged copy (archived source allowed); read-only thread-files
view with per-group truncation reporting.
- D: restore (restored/merged/not_found/no_target/content_missing; no
file moves), purge (continuous row lock across unlink/delete/commit,
retryable on FS errors), retention sweep (lazy + startup, 24h orphan
guard, row-side reconciliation never deletes).
- E: Documents tab (shelf + conversation-files browser, provenance,
archived banner, content-missing rows), /workspace/trash route,
sidebar entry, composer attach handoff, i18n (en-US/zh-CN), e2e mocks
+ specs.
Review hardening folded in (10 rounds, all with tests):
- force active shelf content (HTML/XML family) to download; nosniff on
artifact + content responses; unified unsandboxed-iframe PDF preview
(fixes the pre-existing Chromium sandbox blank in the artifact viewer)
- scope document trash to the URL project under the document lock
- atomic no-overwrite filename reservation for ALL ingestion (seeded
claims + os.link commit with suffix retry; same-name re-upload now
unique-names instead of replacing); hidden staging only, no visible
placeholders; lease cleanup on setup failure
- serialize conversion under the document lock with post-lock active
revalidation; drain locked filesystem work on cancellation; preserve
bytes when an insert's commit state is uncertain (including trashed
rows)
- original-integrity checks before serving text or cached conversions;
content_missing surfaced in list responses (UI reads the flag, no
409-probe); downloads always serve original bytes
- bounded streaming document reads with cached char counts; shelf limits
declared in middleware release identity
- thread-root confinement for from-thread sources; config fallback
rejects fractional/infinite values; composer counts staged
attachments; pending attachments persist until submission or removal;
in-flight instruction/rename edits survive save refetches; shelf and
trash pagination; conversation-file and thread-files pages stay
subscribed to refetches
Docs: README/README_zh, backend API.md/ARCHITECTURE.md, AGENTS.md
contracts, config.example.yaml projects block.
Review follow-ups (head b4807477 → this revision):
- The trash retention sweep is split so repeated lazy triggers stay
bounded: the indexed expiry purge still runs on every trigger
(GET /api/trash/documents, POST /api/trash/purge) while the
O(all rows + all files) reconciliation is throttled to one run per
user per 15 minutes (process-local, per-user window). The startup
sweep now runs as a background task instead of blocking gateway
readiness, and shutdown awaits it (bounded).
- The export scrub (stripInternalMarkers) is fence- and indentation-aware
like the render path, so a pasted, fenced <project>/<documents> snippet
survives markdown export while real injected blocks (never fenced) are
still removed. Fence regexes moved to a dependency-free leaf module to
avoid the messages↔streamdown import cycle.
- The artifact viewer's PDF iframe no longer carries an added title
attribute (the upstream e2e contract locates it via :not([title])), and
the upstream artifact-preview spec now pins the new contract: PDFs
render unsandboxed, images keep sandbox="".
* fix(projects): round-2 review — cancel an overrun trash sweep, restore the PDF frame title
- Shutdown cancelled only the shield around the background startup sweep,
so an all-users reconciliation that outlived the 5s budget kept walking
rows and files while the document repo and DB engine were disposed
underneath it. The wait now lives in `_shutdown_startup_trash_sweep`,
which cancels the task and drains it before worker exit: the shield
keeps the wait bounded, the cancel makes it final (CancelledError lands
at the sweep's next await, and `_run_startup_trash_sweep` only catches
`Exception`, so nothing swallows it).
- The browser-preview iframe lost `title={getFileName(filepath)}` in the
previous fix round, leaving the PDF frame without an accessible name
while its siblings keep theirs. Restore it (WCAG frame titles), assert
it in the DOM test, and anchor the e2e on `iframe[title="report.pdf"]`
instead of `iframe:not([title])`.
* fix(projects): round-3 review — report the sweep's late finish, not a phantom cancel
`Task.cancel()` returns False when the sweep already finished inside the
window between the deadline firing and the cancel, so the shutdown log
claimed a cancellation that never happened. Branch on that outcome: the
warning stays for a real cancel, a late finish is logged at info, and both
paths still reap the task before worker exit.
* fix(projects): round-4 review — make Empty trash delete what it confirms
`POST /api/trash/purge` only ran the retention sweep, and the sweep's
candidate selection is age-gated, so a freshly trashed document survived
"Empty trash" even though the confirmation promises that every listed
document is permanently deleted. With one trashed row the route answered
`{"purged": 0}` and left it in place; `GET /api/trash/documents` sweeps
expired rows before listing, so the visible rows were normally ineligible
for the action by construction.
Empty trash now drives `purge_all_trashed`: the caller's trashed rows
(`list_all_trashed`, no age filter) each go through the same guarded,
row-locked `purge` as the single-document delete — bytes first, then the
row, in one transaction — so a row restored mid-flight is skipped instead of
force-deleted, and an unlink failure rolls that row back and answers 500 with
a retryable message. Retention expiry stays where it was: the sweep's
`purge_candidates` is now the only age-gated selection, and the lazy
retention sweep still runs on the listing and at startup.
Tests: the router suite replaces the retention-gated expectation with the
reviewer's repro (fresh row purged, bytes unlinked, shelf and other users'
trash untouched, a failing unlink stays retryable and 500); a blocking-I/O
anchor drives the new entry point through the offload; the mocked e2e covers
the action end to end; a new real-backend spec performs it against the real
gateway and re-reads `GET /api/trash/documents`. README, API, ARCHITECTURE
and the phase-2 design docs (en+zh) state the age-independent contract.
* fix(messages): drop legacy <uploaded_files> tag handling (#4212)
PR #4174 unified upload-context injection on <current_uploads> (IM and web
both flow through UploadsMiddleware), and #4632 documented the current
path. This removes the remaining backward-compat parsing of the
pre-#4174 <uploaded_files> tag, the final cleanup item tracked by the
issue:
- deermem: only <current_uploads> is stripped from human turns before
memory persistence, and the upload-sentence scrubber drops the legacy
tag alternative.
- mem0: the mirrored message filter recognises only <current_uploads>.
- InputSanitizationMiddleware: remove the legacy tag from the blocked-tag
denylist (it existed only because deermem parsed the old tag).
- frontend: stripUploadedFilesTag / stripInternalMarkers /
parseUploadedFiles and the message-list fallback parse only
<current_uploads>; demo thread fixtures are migrated to the current tag.
Scope decision: a <uploaded_files> block in pre-#4174 history is now
treated as ordinary user content (pinned by tests in both layers) instead
of being silently dropped or stripped.
* style: apply prettier formatting to stripUploadedFilesTag
* fix(uploads): keep legacy <uploaded_files> stripping for display/export only
Addresses review feedback on #4826: removing the legacy tag from the
frontend display layer made pre-#4174 threads render raw <uploaded_files>
XML (with server-side upload paths) in chat, copy data, and JSON exports.
The backend cleanup stands — memory pipelines and the sanitization denylist
treat only <current_uploads> as an internal marker. The frontend keeps the
legacy spelling in its display/export-only utilities
(stripUploadedFilesTag / INTERNAL_MARKER_TAGS / parseUploadedFiles and the
message-list fallback) so old history renders cleanly without leaking
internal paths, while the memory/sanitization scope-decision tests remain
unchanged.
Frontend tests now pin both spellings: <current_uploads> and legacy
<uploaded_files> are stripped from copy data, markdown leak-stripping, and
JSON exports.
* docs(ui): record accepted display-spoof tradeoff for legacy upload tag
Review note (willem-bd): since <uploaded_files> is off the sanitization
denylist, a live user can type the legacy spelling and fabricate file
chips / hide their own message text in display. Display-only and
self-inflicted with no backend semantics, so it is accepted for now;
documented at both the message-list fallback and stripUploadedFilesTag.
Age-gating the legacy spelling remains a possible follow-up.

* perf(frontend): cache settled copy-data derivation across streaming chunks
Every SSE values chunk re-renders MessageList, and the re-render re-derived
copy/toolbar text for every settled row: getAssistantTurnCopyData re-ran the
O(turn bytes) content extraction per settled group, and MessageListItem's
toolbar recomputed getMessageCopyData per message. Settled group arrays keep
their identity across chunks (deriveStableMessageGroups), so both derivations
now cache on that stable reference: a WeakMap keyed on the messages array for
turn copy data, and a useMemo on message identity for the toolbar copy text.
Fixes#5094
* fix(frontend): gate row copy-data memo and correct cache win claim
Address review: derive one memoized copy value only when
isHuman || (!isLoading && showCopyButton) and reuse it for both editing
and the toolbar, so settled assistant rows (whose toolbar never renders)
skip the derivation and human rows derive once, not twice; correct the
assistantTurnCopyDataCache comment — the regex/trim split is already
cached per message, the cache's win is the traversal/allocations for
string turns and the uncached O(bytes) map/join/trim for array-content
turns (benchmarked: 5.1x / 17.2x per settled history sweep).
* style(frontend): expand single-line messages array for Prettier
Two related fixes in the reasoning extraction path of
core/messages/utils.ts:
1. splitInlineReasoning's first pass stripped every closed
<think>...</think> pair unconditionally, so a message that discusses
the tag literally in markdown inline code (e.g. "Wrap your reasoning
in `<think>...</think>`") had its code span hollowed out and the
inner text shipped to the Reasoning panel. The streaming pass already
guards backtick-adjacent openers; apply the same guard to the
closed-pair pass so both passes agree on what counts as literal tag
talk.
2. getAssistantTurnCopyData fell back to reasoning via
`content ?? reasoning`, but extractContentFromMessage never returns
null, so the fallback was dead code and a reasoning-only turn (e.g.
stopped mid-thinking) rendered no copy button at all - inconsistent
with getMessageCopyData, which does copy reasoning in that case. Use
the same empty-string check it uses.
parseUploadedFiles stopped the filename capture at the first "("
([^\n(]+), so an entry like "- photo (1).png (12.3 KB)" failed to
match and the file silently disappeared from the message's file chips.
Browsers produce such names for duplicate downloads, making this a
common real-world shape.
Anchor the size group on the "(<number> <unit>)" pair the backend
emits (uploads_middleware formats sizes as "%.1f KB"/"%.1f MB") and
let the filename match greedily up to it, so parenthesized filenames
parse correctly.
* fix(frontend): render one workspace-change card per run
The workspace-change card is resolved from (threadId, runId) alone, so
every AI message in a run fetches the identical summary. It was rendered
per AI message.
getMessageGroups() opens a separate terminal assistant group for every AI
message that has content and no tool calls, so a run ends in more than one
bubble whenever the model emits answer text mid-run that never gains a
tool call. Each bubble then painted a byte-identical "Edited N files"
card.
Fold the card onto a single position per run, matching how run duration
already anchors its own run-scoped display after the run's last visible
group. Anchoring keys on group index rather than message id because a
terminal assistant group holds exactly one message whose id may be absent.
Fixes#4555
* docs(frontend): explain the workspace-change anchor's group-type restriction
The helper narrows anchor candidates to terminal assistant groups while
getRunDurationDisplaysByGroupIndex accepts a run's last group of any type.
That asymmetry is load-bearing: run duration is emitted by MessageList
around every group, but the workspace-change card comes from
MessageListItem, which MessageList invokes only for human/assistant
groups. Anchoring a run that ends in an assistant:processing group would
pick a position that never renders and silently drop the card.
Record the rule in both places that could invite a future "unification":
the helper's docstring, and the frontend AGENTS.md paragraph that tells
maintainers where run-scoped displays belong.
* feat(clarification): structured form fields for human-input cards
Add a request-side v2 `form` mode to the ask_clarification protocol so
business flows (e.g. expense reimbursement) can collect several values
in one card instead of sequential free-text questions:
- `ask_clarification` gains a restricted `fields` parameter (text /
textarea / number / select / multi_select / checkbox / date)
- ClarificationMiddleware validates and normalizes fields explicitly
(whitelisted types, unknown -> text, select-likes without options ->
text, duplicate/invalid entries dropped, all-invalid falls back to
the legacy modes) since the middleware short-circuits before tool
execution; the plain-text fallback lists fields for IM channels
- Form payloads carry `version: 2` so older frontends degrade to the
text fallback; replies stay on the v1 response protocol — the card
submits a readable summary as `response_kind: "text"`, so journal
persistence and answered-card recovery are unchanged
- Frontend renders typed field controls with required-field validation
and compact multi-select chips
Part of #4400 (scope narrowed per maintainer feedback: request-side
only, no new response kinds, no top-level multi_choice).

* fix(clarification): harden form protocol per review feedback
Address the five review points on #4406:
- Reject field names colliding with JS Object.prototype members on both
sides; frontend reads form values via own-property access only, so
`constructor`/`toString`-style names can no longer leak inherited
members into required validation or the submitted summary
- Close open requests answered through the legacy text fallback: a
visible plain human reply (no response metadata) now marks every
previously-opened request as answered, so upgrading to a v2-aware
frontend cannot leave the composer locked on an already-answered card
- Give checkbox fields deterministic boolean semantics: values are
seeded to an explicit false ("no" in the summary) and `required` means
must-agree/consent; documented in the tool schema
- Make middleware field validation atomic: structurally broken entries
(bad/duplicate/reserved names, over-cap field/option counts or text
lengths) degrade the whole form instead of silently dropping fields;
options are trimmed/deduped with blanks removed so the backend never
emits payloads the frontend parser rejects
- Associate form labels/controls (htmlFor/id), aria-required,
aria-invalid, and error descriptions for accessibility

* refactor(clarification): type the fields item schema via TypedDict
Replace `fields: list[dict[str, Any]]` with `list[ClarificationFormField]`
(a TypedDict with `name` required and the type whitelist as a Literal) so
the provider-facing tool schema documents the item shape instead of an
opaque object relying on the docstring. Runtime validation is unchanged
and stays in ClarificationMiddleware, which intercepts the call before
tool execution. Addresses the non-blocking review suggestion on #4406.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(frontend): drop unsupported aria-invalid from multi-select group
jsx-a11y: role=group does not support aria-invalid; the error linkage
stays via aria-describedby.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(clarification): coerce numeric required flags and normalize fields once
- `_normalize_bool` now coerces 1/0 (some providers serialize booleans
as integers), so `required: 1` no longer silently flips to optional
- `_handle_clarification` normalizes `fields` once and passes the result
to both the text fallback and the payload builder
Addresses the non-blocking review nits on #4406.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(clarification): harden form protocol per contract review round 2
Backend:
- Guard unhashable JSON in the intercept path: `type: []`/`{}` degrades
the field to text and `clarification_type: []` coerces to str instead
of raising TypeError (which, with return_direct, ended the turn with
an error and no card or fallback)
- Add a total budget over the serialized normalized fields (16KB UTF-8
bytes): per-item caps alone admitted forms whose IM text fallback
exceeded channel delivery limits (Slack 40k chars, Feishu ~30KB card),
silently truncating trailing fields; a boundary test proves any
accepted form's fallback stays deliverable
Frontend:
- Submission value now appends a JSON block keyed by stable field names
(readable summary alone is delimiter-ambiguous), with a collision
regression test
- Parser boundary tightened to match backend constraints: empty option
values (Radix SelectItem crash), duplicate option ids/values,
duplicate field names, and the form<->version-2 binding are rejected
- Keep the error node mounted while any field is still invalid so
aria-describedby never points at a removed element (happy-dom
interaction test)
- Required semantics are now accessible: native checkbox control (no
HTML required attribute — it would intercept the custom submit path),
visually-hidden localized "required" markers next to the aria-hidden
asterisks
- Legacy-fallback closure narrowed to the latest unanswered request:
nothing guarantees a single outstanding clarification across runs, and
closing all would silently swallow older decisions; an older request
left open becomes the active card again

* fix(frontend): keep clarification selects controlled
---------
Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(frontend): strip and parse the <current_uploads> upload context tag
#4174 renamed the upload context block that UploadsMiddleware prepends to
the user message from <uploaded_files> to <current_uploads>, but the
frontend tag vocabulary was not updated, so the raw block (file list plus
usage guidance) rendered inside the user's chat bubble and the file-chip
content fallback stopped matching. Add the new tag to
stripUploadedFilesTag, INTERNAL_MARKER_TAGS (covers export and streamdown
preprocessing), parseUploadedFiles, and the chip fallback detection.
<uploaded_files> stays supported for history and IM-channel messages.
* fix(frontend): parse upload-context sizes to bytes for the file chip
parseUploadedFiles stored the raw leading number of the human-readable
size (e.g. parseInt("177.6 KB") -> 177) into FileInMessage.size, which
is documented as bytes. On the content-fallback chip path (history/IM
messages without additional_kwargs.files) formatBytes then rendered a
177.6 KB file as "0.2 KB".
Convert the backend's "<n> KB" / "<n> MB" form back to bytes so the chip
re-renders at the original magnitude; update the parse tests to assert
byte values.
* fix(frontend): keep leading orphan tool messages visible
#3880 stopped dropping orphan tool messages that arrive after a terminal
group, but left the leading-orphan branch dropping the message with a
console.error on every render. The case is reachable: history pagination
cuts by event seq, not turn boundaries, so the first loaded page can
begin mid-turn with tool results whose AI tool-call message sits on an
unloaded older page — in dev mode the diagnostic surfaces as a
full-screen Next.js error overlay (#4399). Open a processing group for
the leading orphan instead; loading the older page re-groups it under
its real turn.
* test(frontend): lock leading-orphan accumulation invariant; clarify self-heal comment
Address review on #4408:
- The self-heal note only holds for the pagination path. The
hidden-only-precedent case and a truly orphaned tool have no older page to
load, so the processing group persists and renders as an empty
ChainOfThought shell (convertToSteps emits steps only for type === ai).
Document that as an accepted degradation instead of implying it always
self-heals.
- Add a test locking the accumulation invariant: a leading orphan followed by
a real tool-call turn folds into one processing group, not a stranded empty
group beside the real turn.
* feat(subagents): show runtime metadata on task cards
* fix(subagents): stop task-card render loop and dedupe model fetches
Address code review on the runtime-metadata cards:
- P1 render loop: the terminal ToolMessage is re-parsed on every
MessageList render and always carries modelName/usage, so the
presence-based setTasks condition fired a fresh state object each
render -> "Maximum update depth exceeded". computeNextSubtask now
returns a value-compared `changed` flag and a pure subtaskNotification()
routes terminal transitions through the deferred after-render path
while skipping no-op re-parses.
- Per-card useModels refetch: add staleTime: Infinity to the ["models"]
query so every subtask card shares one /api/models fetch instead of
refetching on each mount.
* make format
* refactor(subagents): dedupe token-usage validators + tidy event narrowing
Address PR review follow-ups:
- DRY: extract one shared token-usage validator per side. Backend
status_contract.normalize_token_usage() now backs both the terminal
ToolMessage metadata and the subagent.step/.end run events
(step_events.py), and frontend messages/usage.normalizeTokenUsage()
backs both the live task_running event (lifecycle.ts) and the terminal
ToolMessage metadata (subtask-result.ts). Prevents the input/output/
total_tokens validation from drifting across the four former copies.
- Nit: onCustomEvent narrows event.type once instead of re-checking the
object shape per branch; the redundant task_started early-return
(already validated by taskEventToSubtaskUpdate) is dropped.
* feat(frontend): add structured human input cards for ask_clarification
Implement a reusable Human Input Card flow for ask_clarification while keeping
the existing text fallback for older clients and IM channels.
Backend:
- Add structured ToolMessage.artifact.human_input payloads for clarification requests.
- Preserve ToolMessage.content as the readable Markdown/text fallback.
- Normalize clarification options from native lists, JSON strings, plain strings,
mixed scalar values, None, and missing options.
- Derive input_mode as choice_with_other when options exist, otherwise free_text.
- Keep disable_clarification non-interactive behavior as a plain ToolMessage with
no human_input artifact.
- Cover artifact persistence and Gateway message metadata preservation in tests.
Frontend:
- Add human input protocol types, runtime guards, extractors, response builders,
and thread-state helpers.
- Add reusable HumanInputCard with option buttons, free-text input, pending,
read-only, disabled, and answered states.
- Render structured clarification cards from artifact.human_input, with Markdown
fallback for malformed or legacy tool messages.
- Preserve line breaks in structured question/context/option text.
- Hide submitted clarification bridge messages from the chat UI via
additional_kwargs.hide_from_ui.
- Send structured human_input_response metadata through the fourth sendMessage
options argument, preserving run context in the third argument.
- Wire submissions for normal chats, custom agent chats, agent bootstrap chats,
and sidecar chats.
- Derive answered state from raw thread.messages so hidden replies still update
the original card.
- Clear pending state when the hidden reply arrives, dispatch is dropped, or a
later async stream failure appears on thread.error.
* perf(frontend): optimize HumanInputCard UI interactions
- Support Enter key to submit text input (Shift+Enter for newline)
- Render question and context fields as Markdown instead of plain text
- Replace deprecated FormEventHandler type with structural typing
* test(frontend): add unit test cover optimize HumanInputCard UI interactions
* feat(frontend): disabled chatbox when has new human-input-card
* fix(style): lint error fix
* fix: sanitize hidden human input replies
- Preserve IME composition safety for human input card Enter submits
- Treat hidden human input responses as genuine user messages for sanitization
- Keep hidden card replies in memory filtering while excluding malformed/internal hidden messages
- Add regression coverage for card IME handling and hidden reply sanitization
* fix: tighten human input response validation
- Reject empty hidden human input response values
- Remove invalid list ARIA role from human input card options
- Add backend coverage for empty response payloads

* feat(frontend): add side conversations for quoted follow-ups
* style(frontend): apply prettier formatting to sidecar-chat files
* fix(frontend): surface sidecar cascade cleanup failures via console.warn
Previously deleteSidecarThreadsForParent silently swallowed both
lookup errors and per-thread deletion failures, so parent thread
deletions could succeed while orphaning sidecar threads with no
signal to the caller. Log a warning that includes the parent id
and the failed thread ids/reasons so the leak is discoverable in
telemetry, matching the existing console.warn/error pattern in
this file.
* fix(frontend): address all sidecar review feedback
Resolve every reviewer comment on PR #3934:
- input-box/hooks/sidecar-panel: clear quoted references only via an
`onSent` callback that fires after the in-flight guard, so a dropped
send no longer silently discards quotes (willem-bd #3550).
- message-list: flip the selection toolbar below the selection when it
would clip above the viewport (willem-bd #3551).
- reference-metadata/thread/input-box: keep referenced ids, roles, and
count arrays 1:1 parallel instead of deduping ids (willem-bd #3552).
- message-list: widen selection containment to the shared assistant-turn
container and hint when a selection crosses messages (willem-bd #3553).
- sidecar/api: coalesce concurrent sidecar creates for one parent behind
a single in-flight promise to prevent duplicates (willem-bd #3554).
- sidecar-trigger/context: force-restore on trigger click so a sidecar
deleted elsewhere self-heals instead of opening a dead thread
(willem-bd #3555).
- threads/hooks: surface sidecar cascade cleanup failures via
console.warn for both lookup and per-thread deletes (Copilot).
Add unit + e2e coverage for parallel metadata, atomic create, and
trigger self-healing.
A reasoning+content AI message with no tool calls was grouped into both an
`assistant:processing` group (the ChainOfThought panel above the bubble) and an
`assistant` group (the bubble's own Reasoning collapsible), so its reasoning
rendered twice. Such a message now becomes only the assistant bubble; the
ChainOfThought panel keeps handling intermediate reasoning and tool steps.
Closes#3868
* fix(frontend): keep orphan tool messages visible
LangGraph `messages-tuple` stream mode can emit tool-result events
out of order or replay them from subagent state (e.g. the bash subagent
under LocalSandboxProvider with allow_host_bash: true). When that
happens, the tool message arrives after a terminal assistant/human
group, so getMessageGroups' lastOpenGroup() returns null.
The previous behaviour was console.error + drop, which silently hid
the tool result from the UI - the user could not see the tool output
or tool-call records even though the agent executed the action
correctly (backend + Langfuse trace were both fine).
Fallback now attaches the orphan tool message to the most recent group
so the UI shows it. Adds a unit test that covers the orphan-tool path
and a duplicate-stream regression test.
* test(frontend): make orphan-tool replay test actually reach the fallback
The previous fixture was `human → ai(tool_calls) → tool → tool(replay)`
with no terminal group in between, so both tool messages hit the
unchanged happy path (`open.messages.push(...)`). Neither message was
an orphan, the new `else if (groups.length > 0)` fallback was never
exercised, and the `>= 1` length assertion was satisfied trivially by
t-1a alone.
Interleave a terminal assistant message between the original tool
result and the replayed one, so t-1b arrives when lastOpenGroup()
returns null. Now the strict assertion that t-1b is reachable can only
pass via the new fallback branch.
Review feedback from @willem-bd on PR #3880.
* fix(frontend): satisfy noUncheckedIndexedAccess in orphan-tool fallback
The fallback branch pushed into `groups[groups.length - 1].messages`
directly, which trips `noUncheckedIndexedAccess` under the project's
strict TS config and breaks lint-frontend, e2e-tests, and the
full-stack render CI layer.
Take `groups[groups.length - 1]` into a local `lastGroup` and check
for `undefined` explicitly. The `else if (groups.length > 0)` guard
becomes redundant once `lastGroup` is checked, so the branches are
folded into the outer `else` to keep the structure flat. Behavior is
unchanged: orphan tools still attach to the most recent group, and
the empty-groups diagnostic still logs at ERROR level.
Review feedback from @willem-bd on PR #3880.

* fix(frontend): render full content for multi-part AI messages
Gemini streams the first content block as a {type:text} object carrying
the thinking signature, then emits continuation deltas as bare strings.
The content extractors only kept {type:text} objects and dropped the
string parts, truncating each AI message to its first block.
Handle string elements in extractContentFromMessage, extractTextFromMessage,
and textOfMessage so the full message renders.

* test(frontend): cover multi-part AI message content extraction
Add a regression test for the #1000 truncation: an AI message whose
content is [{type:text, signature}, "bare string"] (Gemini's shape after
LangChain merge_content). Fails on main, passes with the extractor fix.

* test(frontend): cover textOfMessage multi-part content extraction
Add tests for the bare-string continuation case and the null-when-empty
contract, and document why textOfMessage joins flat ("") while the body
extractors join with "\n". Addresses review feedback on #3649.

* fix(frontend): strip unclosed <think> tags from streaming AI content
During streaming, an opening <think> tag may arrive in one chunk
while the matching </think> arrives in a later chunk. The existing
splitInlineReasoning regex only matched fully closed pairs, so the
mid-flight reasoning was left in message.content and rendered into
the chat bubble via the markdown pipeline's rehypeRaw plugin until
the closing tag landed.
Extend splitInlineReasoning with a second pass: after stripping every
closed <think>...</think> pair, route any remaining content from a
lone opener to the reasoning slot and leave only the preceding
preamble in content. Closed-tag behavior is unchanged.
Covers every provider whose stream emits reasoning inline as <think>
tags (MiniMax streaming path, MindIE, PatchedChatOpenAI, and any
gateway-served DeepSeek/OpenAI-compatible model).
* style(frontend): apply prettier formatting to streaming reasoning tests
* fix(frontend): skip <think> split for literal think tags in inline code
Treats a `<think>` opener immediately preceded by a backtick as part of
markdown inline code rather than a streaming reasoning marker. Prevents
permanent content truncation when an AI message documents the `<think>`
tag literally (e.g. ``Use `<think>` markers``), where the streaming-safe
fallback would otherwise route the rest of the answer into the reasoning
panel because no `</think>` ever arrives.
Adds regression tests for both the post-stream and mid-stream cases.
* fix(task-tool): unwrap callback manager when locating usage recorder
`config["callbacks"]` may arrive as a `BaseCallbackManager` (e.g. the
`AsyncCallbackManager` LangChain hands to async tool runs), not just a plain
list. The previous `for cb in callbacks` loop raised
`TypeError: 'AsyncCallbackManager' object is not iterable`, which
`ToolErrorHandlingMiddleware` then converted into a failed `task` ToolMessage
even though the subagent had completed internally — Ultra mode lost subagent
results and the lead agent fell back to redoing the work.
Unwrap `BaseCallbackManager.handlers` before searching for the recorder.
Refs: bytedance/deer-flow#3107 (BUG-002)
* fix(frontend): treat any task tool error as a terminal subtask failure
The subtask card status machine matched only three English prefixes (`Task
Succeeded. Result:`, `Task failed.`, `Task timed out`). Anything else fell
through to `in_progress`, so a `task` tool error wrapped by
`ToolErrorHandlingMiddleware` (`Error: Tool 'task' failed ...`) left the card
spinning forever even after the run had ended.
Extract the prefix logic into `parseSubtaskResult` and recognise any leading
`Error:` token as a terminal failure. The extracted function is unit-tested
against the legacy prefixes plus the `AsyncCallbackManager` regression
captured in the upstream issue.
Refs: bytedance/deer-flow#3107 (BUG-007)
* fix(frontend): exclude hidden, reasoning, and tool payloads from chat export
`formatThreadAsMarkdown` / `formatThreadAsJSON` iterated raw messages without
running the UI-level `isHiddenFromUIMessage` filter. Exported transcripts
therefore included `hide_from_ui` system reminders, memory injections,
provider `reasoning_content`, tool calls, and tool result messages — content
that is intentionally hidden in the chat view.
Filter the export to the user-visible transcript by default and gate
reasoning / tool calls / tool messages / hidden messages behind explicit
`ExportOptions` flags so a future debug export can opt back in without
forking the formatter.

* fix(gateway): route get_config through get_app_config for mtime hot reload
`get_config(request)` returned the `app.state.config` snapshot captured at
startup. The worker / lead-agent path then threaded that frozen `AppConfig`
through `RunContext` and `agent_factory`, so per-run fields edited in
`config.yaml` (notably `max_tokens`) were ignored until the gateway process
was restarted — even though `get_app_config()` already does mtime-based
reload at the bottom layer.
Route the request dependency through `get_app_config()` directly. Runtime
`ContextVar` overrides (`push_current_app_config`) and test-injected
singletons (`set_app_config`) keep working; `app.state.config` is now only
read at startup for one-shot bootstrap (logging level, IM channels,
`langgraph_runtime` engines).
`tests/test_gateway_deps_config.py` encoded the old snapshot contract and is
removed; `tests/test_gateway_config_freshness.py` replaces it with mtime,
ContextVar, and `set_app_config` coverage. `test_skills_custom_router.py` and
`test_uploads_router.py` now inject test configs via FastAPI
`dependency_overrides[get_config]` instead of mutating `app.state.config`.
Document the hot-reload boundary in `backend/CLAUDE.md` so reviewers know
which fields are picked up on the next request vs. which still require a
restart (`database`, `checkpointer`, `run_events`, `stream_bridge`,
`sandbox.use`, `log_level`, `channels.*`).

* fix(gateway): broaden get_config 503 to any config-load failure
Address review feedback on the previous commit:
1. Narrow exception catch removed. The old contract returned 503 whenever
`app.state.config is None`. The first cut only mapped
`FileNotFoundError`, leaving `PermissionError`, YAML parse errors, and
pydantic `ValidationError` to bubble up as 500. At the request boundary
we treat any inability to materialise the config as "configuration not
available" (503) and log the original exception so the operator still
has the stack.
2. Removed the unused `request: Request` parameter and the matching
`# noqa: ARG001`. FastAPI's `Depends()` does not require the dependency
to accept `Request`; the only call site uses the no-arg form.
3. `backend/CLAUDE.md` boundary now lists the *reason* each field is
restart-required (engine binding, singleton caching, one-shot
`apply_logging_level`, etc.), not just the field name, so reviewers do
not have to reverse-engineer the boundary themselves.
Tests parametrise four exception classes (`FileNotFoundError`,
`PermissionError`, `ValueError`, `RuntimeError`) and assert 503 for each.

* fix(task-tool): defend _find_usage_recorder against non-list callbacks
Address review feedback. The previous commit handled the two common shapes
LangChain hands to async tool runs — a plain `list[BaseCallbackHandler]` and
a `BaseCallbackManager` subclass — but iterated any other shape directly,
which would still raise `TypeError` if e.g. a single handler instance leaked
through without a list wrapper.
Treat any non-list, non-manager `config["callbacks"]` value as "no recorder"
rather than crash. Docstring now lists all four shapes explicitly. New tests
cover the single-handler-object case, `runtime is None`, `callbacks is None`,
and `runtime.config` being a non-dict — all required to be silent no-ops.
Refs: bytedance/deer-flow#3107 (BUG-002)
* fix(frontend): drop dead identity ternary and add opt-in export tests
Address review feedback on the previous export commit:
1. Removed the no-op `typeof msg.content === "string" ? msg.content : msg.content`
expression in `formatThreadAsJSON`. Both branches returned the same value;
the message content now flows through unchanged whether it is a string or
the rich `MessageContent[]` shape (LangChain JSON-serialises the array
structure correctly already).
2. Expanded the JSDoc on `ExportOptions` to make it clearer that the four
flags are not currently wired to any UI control — callers wanting a debug
export must build the options object explicitly. The default behaviour
continues to match the explicit prescription in
bytedance/deer-flow#3107 BUG-006.
3. Added opt-in coverage. The previous tests only exercised the
`options = {}` default path; the new cases verify each flag flips the
corresponding payload back into the export so a future debug-export
surface does not silently break the contract.
Refs: bytedance/deer-flow#3107 (BUG-006)
* fix(frontend): export subtask prefix constants and document fallback intent
Address review feedback on the previous BUG-007 commit:
1. `SUCCESS_PREFIX`, `FAILURE_PREFIX`, `TIMEOUT_PREFIX`, and the
`ERROR_WRAPPER_PATTERN` regex are now exported. The JSDoc explicitly
pins them as part of the backend↔frontend contract defined in
`task_tool.py` and `tool_error_handling_middleware.py`, so any future
structured-status migration (e.g. backend writing
`additional_kwargs.subagent_status` instead of leading text) can
reference these from one canonical place rather than redefine them.
2. The `in_progress` fallback now carries a docstring explaining the
deliberate choice — LangChain only ever emits a `ToolMessage` once the
tool itself has returned, so unrecognised content means the contract
has drifted and "still running" is the right operator signal (eagerly
marking it terminal-failed would mask the drift).
No behaviour change; this is documentation and an API export.

* fix(gateway): drop app.state.config snapshot and freeze run_events_config
Address @ShenAC-SAC's BUG-001 review on #3131. The previous cut still
stored an ``AppConfig`` snapshot on ``app.state.config`` for startup
bootstrap. Two follow-on hazards from that:
1. Future code touching the gateway lifespan could accidentally start
reading ``app.state.config`` again, silently regressing the request
hot path back to a stale snapshot.
2. ``get_run_context()`` paired a freshly-reloaded ``AppConfig`` with the
startup-bound ``event_store`` and a *live* ``run_events_config``
field — so an operator who edited ``run_events.backend`` mid-flight
would have produced a run context whose ``event_store`` and
``run_events_config`` referred to different backends.
Clean approach (aligned with the direction in PR #3128):
- ``lifespan()`` keeps a local ``startup_config`` variable and passes it
explicitly into ``langgraph_runtime(app, startup_config)`` and into
``start_channel_service``. No ``app.state.config`` attribute is set at
any point.
- ``langgraph_runtime`` now accepts ``startup_config`` as a required
parameter, removing the ``getattr(app.state, "config", None)`` lookup
and the "config not initialised" runtime error.
- The matching ``run_events_config`` is frozen onto ``app.state`` next
to ``run_event_store`` so ``get_run_context`` reads the two from the
same startup-time source. ``app_config`` continues to be resolved
live via ``get_app_config()``.
- ``backend/CLAUDE.md`` boundary explanation updated to spell out the
``startup_config`` / ``get_app_config()`` split.
New regression test ``test_run_context_app_config_reflects_yaml_edit``
exercises the worker-feeding path: it asserts that ``ctx.app_config``
follows a mid-flight ``config.yaml`` edit while
``ctx.run_events_config`` stays frozen to the startup snapshot the
event store was built from.

* fix(frontend): parse Task cancelled and polling timed out as terminal
Address @ShenAC-SAC's BUG-007 review on #3131. `task_tool.py` actually
emits five terminal strings:
- `Task Succeeded. Result: …`
- `Task failed. …`
- `Task timed out. …`
- `Task cancelled by user.` ← previously matched none
- `Task polling timed out after N minutes …` ← previously matched none
The previous cut handled three; the last two fell through to the
"unknown content" branch and pushed the subtask card back to
`in_progress` even though the backend had already reached a terminal
state. Add explicit matches plus regression tests for both. The
`in_progress` fallback is now reserved for genuinely unrecognised
output (i.e. contract drift), as documented.

* fix(frontend): sanitize JSON export content via the Markdown content path
Address @ShenAC-SAC's BUG-006 review and the Copilot inline comment on
#3131. The previous cut filtered hidden/tool messages out of the JSON
export but still serialised `msg.content` verbatim, so:
- inline `<think>…</think>` wrappers stayed in the exported `content`
even with `includeReasoning: false`,
- content-array thinking blocks leaked the `thinking` field,
- `<uploaded_files>…</uploaded_files>` markers leaked the workspace
paths a user uploaded files to.
JSON now goes through the same sanitiser the Markdown path uses
(`extractContentFromMessage` + `stripUploadedFilesTag`). Reasoning and
tool_calls remain gated behind their `ExportOptions` flags. AI / human
rows that sanitise to empty content with no opted-in reasoning or tool
calls are dropped so the JSON matches the Markdown path's `continue`
on empty assistant fragments.
New regression tests cover the three leak shapes the reviewer called
out plus the empty-content-drop case.

* test(gateway): align lifespan stub with langgraph_runtime two-arg signature
Codex round-3 review of c0bc7a06 flagged this: changing
`langgraph_runtime` to require `startup_config` as a second positional
argument broke the one-arg stub `_noop_langgraph_runtime(_app)` in
`test_gateway_lifespan_shutdown.py`, which is patched into
`app.gateway.app.langgraph_runtime` by the lifespan shutdown bounded-timeout
regression. Lifespan would then call the stub with two args and raise
`TypeError` before the bounded-shutdown assertion ran.
Update the stub to match the new signature. The shutdown test itself is
unaffected — it only cares about the channel `stop_channel_service` hang
path.

* fix(frontend): strip every known backend marker in export, not just uploads
Codex round-3 review of 258ca800 and the matching maintainer feedback on
PR #3131 made the same point: the JSON export now ran the
Markdown-side sanitiser, but that sanitiser only stripped
`<uploaded_files>`. The full set of payloads middleware embeds inside
message `content` is larger:
- `<uploaded_files>` — `UploadsMiddleware`
- `<system-reminder>` — `DynamicContextMiddleware`
- `<memory>` — `DynamicContextMiddleware` (nested inside system-reminder)
- `<current_date>` — `DynamicContextMiddleware`
The primary protection is still `isHiddenFromUIMessage`: the
`<system-reminder>` HumanMessage is marked `hide_from_ui: true` and never
reaches the formatter. This commit adds the second line of defence so a
regression that drops the `hide_from_ui` flag — or any future middleware
that injects the same tag vocabulary into a visible HumanMessage —
cannot leak the payload into the export file.
Concrete changes:
- New `INTERNAL_MARKER_TAGS` constant + `stripInternalMarkers(content)`
helper in `core/messages/utils.ts`. The constant doubles as
documentation for the backend↔frontend contract.
- `formatMessageContent` in `export.ts` now calls `stripInternalMarkers`
instead of `stripUploadedFilesTag`. UI render paths
(`message-list-item.tsx`) keep using the narrower function so a user
legitimately typing `<memory>` in a meta-discussion is preserved.
- The "drop empty rows" guard in `buildJSONMessage` switched from
`=== undefined` to truthy `!` checks. Codex spotted the asymmetry: when
`extractReasoningContentFromMessage` returned the empty string (which it
legitimately can), the JSON path emitted `{reasoning: ""}` while the
Markdown path's `!reasoning` `continue` correctly dropped the row.
New regression tests cover the defence-in-depth strip with a
`<system-reminder><memory><current_date>` payload deliberately *not*
marked `hide_from_ui`; tool-message sanitization under
`includeToolMessages: true`; the mixed-content-array case
(`thinking + text + image_url`); and the opted-in empty-reasoning drop.
Live verification on a real Ultra-mode thread that uploaded a PDF
(`曾鑫民-薪资交易流水.pdf`): backend state's first HumanMessage carries the
`<uploaded_files>` block (with `/mnt/user-data/uploads/...` paths) as part
of a content-array. The Markdown and JSON export blobs both come back
free of `<uploaded_files>`, `<system-reminder>`, `<current_date>`,
`tool_calls`, and reasoning — while preserving the user's `这是什么 ?`
prompt and the assistant's visible answer.

* test(frontend): cover trim, varied N, and pre-execution Error: prefixes
Codex round-3 review of 50e2c257 flagged three coverage gaps in the
subtask-status parser:
1. `Task cancelled by user.` and `Task polling timed out` previously had
no whitespace-trim coverage — the original trim test only exercised
the success prefix. Streaming chunks can arrive with leading/trailing
newlines; the regex needed an explicit assertion.
2. The polling-timeout case was tested only at one `N` (15 minutes). The
backend interpolates the live `timeout_seconds // 60` value, so the
matcher must hold for any positive integer. Now we run the case for
1, 5, and 60 minutes.
3. `task_tool.py` also emits three `Error:` strings for pre-execution
failures — unknown subagent type, host-bash disabled, and "task
disappeared from background tasks". They are intentionally handled by
`ERROR_WRAPPER_PATTERN` rather than dedicated prefixes (the wrapper
already produces the right terminal-failed shape) but had no test
coverage proving that wiring. Codex was right that a refactor splitting
one of them off into its own prefix would silently break things.
The JSDoc on the constants block now spells the three pre-execution
errors out so the relationship between `task_tool.py` returns and the
prefix vocabulary is explicit.
No production code change beyond the docstring — this commit is pure
coverage hardening for the contract that already exists.

* fix(middleware): Prevent todo completion reminder IMMessage leak (#2892)
* make format
* fix(middleware): Clear stale todo reminder counts (#2892)
* add size guard for _completion_reminder_counts and add a integration test
* feat: real-time subagent token usage display in header and per-turn
Backend:
- Persist subagent token usage to AIMessage.usage_metadata via
TokenUsageMiddleware, so accumulateUsage() naturally includes
subagent tokens without frontend state management
- Cache subagent usage by tool_call_id in task_tool, write back
to the dispatching AIMessage on next model response
- Emit subagent token usage on all terminal task events
(task_completed, task_failed, task_cancelled, task_timed_out)
- Report subagent usage to parent RunJournal for API totals
- Search backward from ToolMessage to find dispatching AIMessage
for correct multi-tool-call attribution
Frontend:
- Remove subagentUsage state, custom event handling, and prop
threading — subagent tokens are now embedded in message metadata
- Simplify selectHeaderTokenUsage (no subagentUsage parameter)
- Per-turn inline badges show turn-specific usage via message
accumulation
- Remove isLoading guard from MessageTokenUsageList for dynamic
updates during streaming
* fix: prevent header token double counting from baseline reset race
onFinish, onError, and thread-switch useEffect all reset
pendingUsageBaselineMessageIdsRef to an empty Set. If
thread.isLoading is still true on the next render, all messages
pass the getMessagesAfterBaseline filter and their tokens are
added to backendUsage (which already includes them), causing
the header to display up to 2× the actual token count.
Capture current message IDs instead of using an empty Set so
that getMessagesAfterBaseline correctly returns no pending
messages even if thread.isLoading lags behind the stream end.
* fix: write back subagent tokens for all concurrent task tool calls
TokenUsageMiddleware only processed messages[-2], so when a
single model response dispatched multiple task tool calls only
the last ToolMessage had its cached subagent usage written back
to the dispatch AIMessage.usage_metadata. Earlier tasks' usage
stayed in _subagent_usage_cache indefinitely (leak) and never
appeared in the per-turn inline token display.
Walk backward through all consecutive ToolMessages before the
new AIMessage, and accumulate updates targeting the same
dispatch message into one state update so overlapping writes
don't clobber each other.
* fix: clean up subagent usage cache entry on task cancellation
When a task_tool invocation is cancelled via CancelledError, any
cached subagent usage entry leaked because the TokenUsageMiddleware
writeback path never fires after cancellation. Pop the cache entry
before re-raising to prevent unbounded growth of the module-level
_subagent_usage_cache dict.
* fix: address token usage review feedback
* fix: handle missing config for subagent usage cache

This PR improves MiniMax Code Plan integration in DeerFlow by fixing three issues in the current flow: stream errors were not clearly surfaced in the UI, the frontend could not display the actual provider model ID, and MiniMax reasoning output could leak into final assistant content as inline <think>...</think>. The change adds a MiniMax-specific adapter, exposes real model IDs end-to-end, and adds a frontend fallback for historical messages.
