feat(projects): best-effort LLM summaries for shelf documents (#6581)
Opt-in per-document summary column rendered into the injected <documents> index, list_project_documents JSON, and the documents API. Pipeline (projects/summaries.py, behind the narrow enqueue_summary interface): - The two shelf write routes enqueue a job on created=True; dedup hits never regenerate. Off by default (projects.summaries_enabled). - Bounded worker pool (summary_concurrency + bounded summary_queue_size; a full queue drops the job) fed by FIFO; shutdown drains queued jobs, delivers one sentinel per worker via blocking put (queue smaller than the worker pool cannot strand idle workers), and bounds only genuinely in-flight jobs with the grace period. - Jobs carry (document_id, project_id, user_id) explicitly; the job's owner is bound into the user ContextVar around the model call so tracing/usage attribution never falls back to 'default'. - Text source reuses read_text_serving_path (convertible-first rule, content validation); conversion has no deadline (await_drained), the model call has a caller-side wait limit — the worker slot is retained until the provider call actually finishes and late results are discarded. - Output contract: strip leading <think> reasoning -> unwrap fence/ quotes -> collapse to one line -> empty is NULL -> UTF-8 byte cap on a character boundary; length-capped responses (provider-normalized detectors) are failures. - set_summary pins updated_at (literal self-assignment) so a landing summary never reorders the shelf; owner-predicated UPDATE is a no-op on rows purged mid-generation. - Metrics: eligible/success/failed/skipped/queue_dropped/ uncapped_accepted. Schema/config: - project_documents.summary (migration 0036, nullable, no backfill; forward-compat floor unchanged). - Six projects.summary_* keys, all registered in STARTUP_ONLY_FIELDS (captured once at lifespan startup); config_version 57 -> 58. - run_oneshot_llm gains an optional model_overrides passthrough (passed only when set, existing callers unchanged) and a detailed variant exposing the raw response message for termination-signal detection. Docs: API.md response field, ARCHITECTURE.md pipeline paragraph, migrations AGENTS.md chain head, root AGENTS.md records the scoped all-core exception with the lift-out path.

**Trash tier (spec §8).** Trashed rows are invisible to the shelf index, tools, and listing APIs; they surface only through the `/api/trash` routes with their `trash_origin` display snapshot. Restore is a database re-point — `stored_relpath` is projects-root-relative, so no file ever moves (spec §10.6) — inside one transaction that locks the target active project row, then the source and any merge-candidate rows in ID order; identical active bytes in the target merge (trash row deleted, discarded namespace unlinked best-effort after commit), and a read-only existence/size check under the document lock rejects restores of missing or size-mismatched content with `409 content_missing`, leaving the row trashed. Purge holds the document-row lock continuously across trashed-state revalidation, unlink of the original and `derived/converted.md`, row deletion, and commit: already-absent content counts as removed, any other unlink error rolls back and keeps the row retryable, and retention callers revalidate the selected trash timestamp and cutoff under the lock so a restored-and-re-trashed row is never purged on its former expiry. Empty trash (`POST /api/trash/purge`) runs that same guarded purge once per trashed row of the caller with no age filter — the confirmation covers the whole listing — so the retention cutoff gates only the sweep's candidate selection. The retention sweep runs lazily on `GET /api/trash/documents` and once at gateway startup (no daemon): it purges rows at or past `projects.trash_retention_days` through the same guarded path, then reconciles storage — `.staging/*` entries and unreferenced files older than 24 hours are removed (nothing younger is ever collected; any active or trashed row protects its whole namespace, even after restore to another project) — and detects rows with missing or size-mismatched content, logging them at warning and surfacing them as `content_missing` without ever deleting the row (the row is the user's only record; disposal always starts with the user trashing it).
**Document summaries (opt-in).** `project_documents.summary` is a nullable, best-effort LLM one-liner. The two shelf write routes enqueue a job after row creation (`projects/summaries.py`, off unless `projects.summaries_enabled`); a bounded worker pool (`summary_concurrency` + bounded `summary_queue_size`, full queue drops) resolves text through `read_text_serving_path` (never re-deriving the convertible-first rule), calls the model via `run_oneshot_llm` with a caller-side wait limit (the worker slot is held until the provider call actually finishes; late results are discarded), rejects length-capped output through the shared provider-normalized detectors, and applies a write-time contract (unwrap → single line → empty is NULL → byte cap on a character boundary) before persisting with `updated_at` pinned so a landing summary never reorders the shelf. The summary rides the row's lifecycle (trash/restore/purge need no hooks), renders into the `<documents>` index and `list_project_documents` tag-neutralized at both exits, and is counted through `eligible/success/failed/skipped/queue_dropped/uncapped_accepted` metrics. All failure modes leave `summary = NULL`, which renders exactly like a shelf without the feature.

New tables and a nullable column, so the bootstrap forward-compat floor is unchanged; chains after `0031_scheduled_streak_boundary`. Table create/drop is guarded with a fresh inspector in both directions. New table, so the bootstrap forward-compat floor is unchanged; chains after `0034_run_event_seq_watermark`. The field is private persistence state, never part of `kwargs_json` or a run response; this keeps new-writer/old-reader rolling upgrades from exposing resume digests or synthetic input. Legacy rows remain NULL; new readers accept only the exact old-writer identity shape from `kwargs`, while truly identity-less resume fails closed. The bootstrap forward-compat floor is unchanged. """Best-effort per-document LLM summaries for the project shelf.
A single narrow entry point — :func:`enqueue_summary` — is called by the two
shelf write routes after a row is created. Generation runs in a small worker
pool owned by the Gateway lifespan; every failure mode (disabled, full queue,
ineligible source, conversion/model error, timeout, length-capped output,
purge mid-flight, shutdown) leaves ``summary = NULL``, which renders exactly
like a shelf without the feature.
Invariants:
- Jobs carry ``(document_id, project_id, user_id)`` explicitly; nothing
depends on request ContextVars surviving the worker hand-off.
- The queue is bounded; a full queue drops the job (``queue_dropped``) —
queueing never becomes an unbounded memory commitment.
- Source selection reuses ``read_text_serving_path``; the pipeline never
re-derives convertible/text rules.
- The timeout is a caller-side wait limit: the worker slot is retained until
the provider call actually finishes, and a late result is never written.
Conversion has no deadline.
- Model output passes a write-time contract (unwrap → one line → empty is
NULL → byte-cap on a character boundary) before persistence; length-capped
responses are failures, detected through the shared provider-normalized
detectors.
- The summary UPDATE pins ``updated_at`` (``set_summary``) so a landing
summary never reorders the shelf.
